SYNOPSIS

Can love be more than a four-letter word?

Lissa Blanc is a painter on a mission. She filters the world through a lens of color, line, and form and hides her ambition behind a delicate smirk that lets her critics believe life comes easy. To her, art isn’t what she sees. It’s what she feels. Few know that behind the glitz of a prodigious upbringing, she’s driven to emerge from the shadow of painful memories that insist she’ll never be a renowned talent in her own right.

Cole Rathlen is a photographer on the mend. A crippling grief has stifled his once-rising career and compromised his creative instincts. Knowing he can’t stagnate forever, he seeks a twisted absolution in the form of a woman whose paintings give life to the emotions he won’t let himself imagine, let alone feel.

When the two partner for a prestigious project that will pull them from the mountains of Colorado to the palaces of India, Lissa quickly realizes that more than diverging ideals hinder their search for success and salvation. Was Cole’s life upended by a tragic but unavoidable choice or something more sinister? While Lissa can’t delve into the mystery but not the man, Cole can’t resist a tenacious soul that refuses to leave him chained. As the truth closes in on a project finally sprouting wings, will Lissa sacrifice her chance at success to set Cole free? Or will Cole shrug the chains of lingering regrets to prove that those who love the most, love again

Art-Crossed Love Guest Post

Each book in the Second Chances series includes both mystery and travel elements. With LOVE ME LATER, Ethan and Scarlet tackle a business deal in Copenhagen, Denmark. In ART-CROSSED LOVE, Cole and Lissa find themselves in northern India (Delhi and Agra) for an artistic endeavor.

A common question I receive is, “Do you visit these places before writing them?”

The answer is a resounding, “Yes!”

Resounding because the question harkens back to an age-old conundrum: What came first, the chicken or the egg? Translated for me: Do I write to travel, or do I travel to write?

Both of these travelling vs. writing scenarios apply, but I definitely began my affair with worldwide travel long before I considered writing even one page of fiction. If my extra money and time don’t go toward a real-life adventure, then they get me a story about one (unless, of course, I make an exception for shoes, which I consider a worthy endeavor in their own right!).

To me, travel naturally appeals to readers and vice versa. The purpose of reading fiction, and especially romance, is often escapism. Reading takes us to a place and a life we don’t regularly, if ever, live. Travel does the exact same thing.

ART-CROSSED LOVE finds Cole and Lissa in northern India, a place I found myself in early 2012. While Cole has been many times before, Lissa is a first-time visitor. She’s led a privileged life, and I enjoyed watching her face each new challenge and each new wonder with equal fervor.

Lissa and Cole witness crippling poverty, but also the hope evident when people find joy where others can’t imagine: an impromptu game of cricket, a spicy road-side meal, a Coca-Cola made with real sugar in a tall glass bottle. They also witness the world’s most chaotic traffic, stunning natural beauty, one-of-a-kind architectural wonders, and the eye-watering power of thousands of dung fires burning to keep a city warm and fed.

Notably, I tell stories of other lands from the standpoint of a visitor, not a native. That way, I know my descriptions of the sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and impressions are realistic. They’re realistic because they are what I, as an actual visitor, have experienced. In fact, most of the things Lissa and Cole see and do in India—from the people they meet to the places they go—are variations on my own personal journey.

I believe writing and travel go hand in hand. Not only do I get my best ideas when on the road, but the moments that have most impressed me, whether amazing or terrifying, have almost written themselves.

Any writer will tell you that when that happens, keep at it!

Right now, I have plans for the Second Chances series to take readers to Hungary and then Japan. After that, we’ll see where in the world I end up. My characters will surely follow!

SYNOPSIS

She’s spent her whole life acting. But can she make him believe she doesn’t love him?
Three years ago, a terrified girl named Emma fled a world of crime and abuse in Chicago and bought a one-way ticket to New York. She reinvented herself as an actress, enrolled at the prestigious Fenbrook Academy and buried her pain beneath a vivacious new persona. Her new name was Jasmine.

Now she has to pull off the performance of her career.
Landing her dream part in a police show, she finds herself falling for her co-star, Ryan, a real-life cop. If she lets him get too close, he’ll awaken memories she doesn’t want to face and uncover secrets that could endanger them both. But how can she keep a guy at arm’s length when she has to kiss him on camera?

The last place Ryan imagined himself was on a TV show. Blaming himself for the death of his partner, he’s on a downward spiral of rage and guilt. The show is his last chance…but how can he keep it professional when his co-star is a woman he’s crazy about?

As their on-screen and off-screen relationships merge, things go from hot to blistering. But when Jasmine’s old life catches up with her, will a cop be the one person she can’t be around…or the only person who can save her?

EXCERPT

I’d stopped in at my apartment to grab something to wear and I was suddenly very glad I’d changed at home and thrown a sweatshirt over the top for the journey. I mean, logically, the gym must have had a women’s changing room somewhere, but I couldn’t see a single woman in the place. Everyone looked like a boxer or a marine and the equipment didn’t get any more advanced than big lumps of heavy metal to lift and punchbags. When I walked in, every head seemed to swivel to look at me, and my layer of Jasmine was worn too thin for me to completely ignore it, or relish it as I normally would.

Then I saw him, standing barefoot on a gym mat in gray sweatpants and a black tank top. It was the first time I’d seen his arms and I could see a tattoo on his bicep. He looked like a colossus, standing there with his feet braced apart and his arms folded. I swear a rhino could have charged at him and it would have bounced off.

I walked over to him, trying not to show my nerves. “Okay,” I said. “What are we doing here?”

He beamed at me. “Unarmed combat.”

My insides turned to ice. Why hadn’t he told me?! But why would he? He thought I was the happy, bubbly person I always sold to the world, without a single nightmare in her head. It wasn’t his fault; it was mine.

I could walk away. I could tell him I’d changed my mind and just walk out. But then he’d know something was wrong and he’d start to suspect. I had to push through it and hope I could hold it together.

He must have seen my hesitation because he gave me a doubtful smile and said, “Relax! It’ll be fun. I won’t hurt you!”

I won’t hurt you. A thread of memory pulled tight, glittering and sharp in my mind.

I made my feet take a step toward the gym mat.

“I’ll teach you how to throw me,” Ryan said. “You’ll get to toss me around. It’ll be fun.”

It’ll be fun. The memory screamed and broke, like a guitar string snapping.

Do Jasmine, I thought desperately, and formed my mouth into a goofy smile, but it felt like trying to mold someone else’s face with my hands.

“You okay?” he asked.

“Sure.” I was trying to slow my breathing down. “What do I do?” I walked onto the mat until I was within touching distance.

He was smiling again. The innocent smile of a friend showing another friend something cool. “Okay. Let’s say someone grabs you from the front.”

His huge hand reached out and gathered the front of my tank top. Gently, taking care not to damage it and making sure he didn’t brush a boob by accident. He was being the perfect instructor.

Except, in my mind, we weren’t in a brightly-lit gym. We were in the back room of a bar.

“Now what you want to do, as I pull you towards me, is resist the instinct to pull away. That’s going to put you off balance. Step forward, instead, quickly. Before he knows what’s going on.”

I can’t step forward I’m too frightened it smells like cigarettes in here–

My feet felt like they were encased in ice, but I made them shuffle forward.

Ryan put his hand on my wrist. Warm and gentle, but in my mind–

Hurts it hurts he’s wearing rings and they’re digging in–

“Okay, now bring your arm up like this,”–Ryan lifted my arm. It was loose and floppy, no strength in the muscles–”and grab my wrist here and twist outward.”

He waited, but my hand made no move to grab him. Fear was surging up inside me like freezing white water, as unstoppable as being sick.

“Jas–” he started to say, and touched my face.

I screamed.

It erupted from the dark, from the swirling waters that were Emma. It punched up through Jasmine, tearing a hole clean through her, and blasted out around the gym, all the pain and fear given voice. If screams can have a color, this one was black.

GUEST POST

What Makes a Hero?

In Love & Other Lies, Rue is a good guy hero. He’s kind-hearted, thoughtful, and easy going. Unfortunately this is exactly the wrong kind of man for Abby. She’s a reformed compulsive liar, terrified of a relapse, and can’t bear the thought of dragging a decent man into her mess. She doesn’t consider that he’s exactly the right kind of man for her, because he can see she needs support and gives it without question.

Funny how the wrong man turns out to be her hero!

Now, on the topic of heroes…about a year ago, a friend of mine commented that romance heroes aren’t actually heroes. She believes it’s a misnomer – they’re hardly saving the world. This made me wonder what makes a romance hero heroic? Why are they called heroes at all? I can’t answer on behalf of all lovers of the romance genre – there are many types of romance hero – but there are certain qualities that all the heroes in my books possess to make them worthy of the title.

My heroes are:

Admirable. The hero needs to act in a way that others admire – including the heroine.

Courageous. They always find the courage to fight their demons – and to fight for the heroine’s love.

Strong: My heroes are resilient, often having to endure internal conflict.

Kind: Even burdened by internal conflict, they never act inexcusably.

Combined, these qualities are all it takes, in my opinion!

What are the ideal traits of your perfect hero?

EXCERPT

“Ryan, I love you.” He looks confused, but relief is evident in his eyes, so I continue. “It was wrong of me to tell you about my feelings like I did yesterday. I was being a coward. I’m glad you shared all this with me. I won’t run, Ryan.”

“But, I don’t understand. How can you love me? Even after I told you about what I’ve done … How can you love someone so … horrible?” he says bitterly.

“You are not horrible, Ryan. I know it. I feel it.”

“How?” The desperation in his voice squeezes my chest.

I stare into the deep green pools that are his eyes and wonder how I can show him what I see.

“In here,” I point to my heart, “I believe my heart. And from what you told me, I can tell that you had no family except Mark. You were a kid at thirteen who didn’t want to lose his brother, you were a young man who sacrificed his own freedom for someone he loved the most. Now you are a big business mogul who may be harsh toward his employees, but puts them first even when seeking revenge. It’s an honor for me to love someone as devoted as you.”

“Liz, I’ve lied – ” I interrupt him.

“We are people, Ryan. We all make mistakes. You think I’m so pure? I wanted to use David to stay in Seattle. I agreed to marry someone for my own selfish reasons. Then I came to Russia and spent more than six months making my Granny’s life a living hell. She lost her only daughter. I never once thought about her feelings. She was old, she needed my care, and all I did was sulk for my old life. Even with you, how do you know I’m not using you? Maybe I just like this sense of fulfillment I feel with you that overwhelms the loneliness I’ve felt for so long. I am not a saint, Ryan. I also did awful things.”

Ryan contemplates my words for several minutes. Then says quietly, “I lied to you.”

I sigh. Now I don’t like the direction this conversation is taking. “You already told me that you didn’t need an assistant. There’s more?”

“I read your journal.”

The blood drains from my face.

“You what?” My voice trembles.

“When we were in Nice – the night you got drunk with Mark – I saw your notebook and I read it.”

“I … I …” No words come out of my mouth because I don’t have any. I can’t believe he did it. I wrote my sacred thoughts there, poured some raw feelings on those pages. They were never meant for anyone’s eyes other than mine.

“I’m sorry I did it. I was at a loss, I couldn’t understand what I was feeling for you.”

“So you read my journal to understand yourself? Ryan, it’s private. I poured my soul there. How could you do this?” I may be screaming now, but I don’t care. Some boundaries can’t be crossed.

“That’s who I am, Elizabeth. I don’t care about people’s privacy.”

“I’m so mad at you right now. I don’t even know what to say. Is that all?”

“No.”

Oh God!

“Tell me.” He almost looks scared. That’s when I know there are so many more lies he doesn’t want to tell me about. “Now, Ryan. You are going to tell me every damn thing. You owe me this.”

Facts about The Runaway Ex

By Shani Struthers

The Runaway Ex was never meant to be! The Runaway Year was meant as a standalone but then I got to thinking… what if the happily ever after hits a blip? What if someone from the past turns up, out of the blue, with a secret in tow – a secret she’ll only share with her ex? Voila! A sequel was born!

Certain songs inspire me when I write; I have a song for each book I write. For The Runaway Year, Toploader’s ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ was the one – I wanted to capture that same happy, carefree feeling. The Runaway Ex is grittier though and Rhianna’s ‘Stay’ suits it perfectly. The lyrics and the heartfelt way it’s sung sums up just what the book is all about.

We see a different side to Joseph and Layla in The Runaway Ex, a side perhaps not so palatable, is controversial even. Penny too is not reacting in the way everyone ‘expects’ a new mother to react. And the interesting thing is the characters themselves are shocked at their own behaviour.

Penny was pregnant by the end of The Runaway Year and in The Runaway Ex she has had the baby. But Penny is finding motherhood more of a challenge than she cares to admit. PND is a subject close to my heart and writing her part felt very cathartic indeed.

There’s a third and final Runaway! Oh yep, I think after you’ve read The Runaway Ex, you’ll agree a certain character needs a bit of a break.

Oh, it’ll be a hit alright–when Pandora comes out swinging. She and her friend Melanie are determined to humiliate him onstage. But when they’re caught by security and her ex is summoned, Mackenna decides not to press charges if she’ll join him on tour and follow certain conditions–rules designed to give him the upper hand and keep her in close contact with him once again. Soon, the passion they once shared is reignited, and no matter how much Pandora wants to hate him, her hard exterior starts to crack.

And worse: Mackenna knows it, too. But he hasn’t uncovered all her secrets…

WRITING RIPPED

By Katy Evans

RIPPED – I’m so excited to be sharing with everyone RIPPED, Real series book #5! 🙂

RIPPED began with Pandora, Brooke (Real, Mine and Remy) and Melanie’s (Rogue) goth friend. She’s such a wounded warrior and so bitter that I was completely hooked wanting to know—what happened? What made her like this? Why does she hate men so much?

And that’s how I met her man, Mackenna Jones.

He’s back in Seattle for the concert of the year, and Pandora hates him so much, she is still so stuck in the past for having loved (and lost) him when she was young, she’s determined to go pay him a visit and give him a little something to remember her by. Nothing nice, I assure you.

And that’s where RIPPED totally exploded for me. It’s one of those books where I couldn’t stop writing even for a second. It seemed like I just opened Pandora’s box of secrets and they came spilling out, one after the other. Memories, what truly happened in her eyes, in his eyes, their first kiss (sigh) and so much more. Their past is tumultuous and passionate and their present, when they reunite again, is just as passionate and rocky. They have a long way to go to their HEA but, though Pandora doesn’t feel she deserves it and has never let herself want it, Mackenna has another plan to conquer back his girl.

What I love about this couple in particular is how equal they seem—the push and the pull always kept me guessing as to who had control of the situation, sometimes Pandora had Mackenna by the pants, and plenty of others it was Mackenna who kept getting the upper hand, knowing each and every one of Pandora’s weaknesses (including that he is the main one.)

He is the boy she could never forget.

She is the girl no other girl has ever compared.

Things are about to get RIPPED during Mackenna’s concert tour when his manager thinks it brilliant to force Pandora to tag along. J

ASHLEY’S BOOK REVIEW: 5 STARS

First and foremost, THANK YOU KATY EVANS for gifting Collector of Book Boyfriends book blog this arc!

All.The.Feels! This book ripped my heart out and stomped on it! I love when a book can twist your heart up so much that you actually “feel” what the characters are feeling…that is exactly how this book was for me. I felt every emotion that went through both Mackenna and Pandora as if it were me going through the struggles they were going through.

Mackenna and Pandora loved and lost…that’s the best way to describe it. They were from “different sides of the street” and fate brought them together, but there were unforeseen obstacles in their path.

Pandora has so much anger in her. Anger for Mackenna, anger for her dad, anger for her mom, but most of all anger for herself. She has to learn to overcome this anger. We watch her grow as an individual throughout ripped and learn how her character became who she is today. Can she find closer with her past? Can she forgive Mackenna for ripping her heart out, when she never gave her heart to anyone but him?

” He was the closest I’ve ever been to a person in my life–” (Pandora)

rippedshatteredcollage_zps2e32f5bb

Mackenna “chose” to leave Pandora and pursue stardom and is embracing it with his band “Crack Bikini”…or is he? Why did he leave Pandora? Does he really hate her?

“I fell for a girl who would never love me back the way I wanted her to.” (Mackenna).

Mackenna plays the part of the rock star, but deep down he is just as ripped apart as Pandora.

“Because she did break me.” (Mackenna).

They have a shared past, but can they have a shared future?

“How can you stop belonging to someone who has ravaged you like he did me? How can your first and only love sweep through you like a tornado and not leave his marl?” (Pandora)

Ripped is nothing like anything else Katy Evans has written! Katy Evans has proven to me yet again why she is one of my top favorite authors! And I LOVED getting to see more Remington & Brooke and Greyson & Melanie!!

ANGY’S BOOK REVIEW: 5 RockSTARS

I love it when one of my favorite authors publish a new book. Katy Evans made it with Ripped. This is a beautiful and heartbroken story with great characters and the most unexpected plot ever. I never thought that what happened with both of them, Mackenna and Pandora, in the past was what actually happened. I was in shock! As usual, I was guessing about it, but of course, I was all wrong. I really loved the end of the book, a perfect HEA!

This is the second spin off of The Real Series, it is the turn for Pandora, the best friend of Broke and Melanie. She wasn’t my favorite secondary character in the previous books, she was all grumpy, moody, pessimistic and didn’t believe in love. We get to know her very well in this book, her past, her family, her current feelings and most of all, her way back to love.

10850502_10153450941781490_46682010_n

Mackenna Jones was her first love, first kiss, first in everything. They were madly in love, they had plans for the future, they promised everything and always but…. Nothing really happened. I was in shock finding out that Mackenna was as mad as Pandora was. They both were equally heartbroken and when they meet six years later, it was their opportunity to get back at each other. They were mean to one another and then they were f**king each other brains out of their systems. It was sexy. It was hot. It was awesome!

It was great to read how they started yielding to their true feelings. It was beautiful to read how Pandora finally said what Mackenna wanted to hear from her. It was beautiful to read Mackenna’s feelings, his POV was the best.

The appearances of Broke & Remy and Melanie & Greyson were awesome! I always enjoy reading the after of the HEA of my favorite love stories, and I love love love Real+Mine+Remy and Rogue. I can’t wait for the next book of the series, it is still a mystery, doesn’t have a title but I am going to guess if it is the story of Broke’s sister.

BLOG TOUR & GUEST POST: The Truth About Air & Water (Truth in Lies #2) by Katherine Owen

TruthAboutAirandWaterTour

TruthAirWaterCover

SYNOPSIS

The Truth In Lies Series. READ This Much Is True, book 1 first, although it’s been written as a standalone. Readers say, don’t do that.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” -Ernest Hemingway ~ A Farewell To Arms

They share an epic love but one moment changes everything. A life together that seemed certain is shattered. One learns you never love the same way twice; the other learns what it means to come home. You only think you know how this love story goes, but do you really know how an epic love can end?

“There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice.”
-F. Scott Fitzgerald

She is living color, and I’ve been in a black-and-white world for far too long without her.
Powerful stuff. It surrounds me. I’ve felt it since I first arrived. The forcefield of her. The magnetism of her. The power she wields over me. I’m alive again because of her, like a dying plant that finally gets some water. I’ve got it bad for this girl.
Reality dawns.
The light comes through the darkness and shines on me.
She’s my water.

-Lincoln Presley

The truth is I breathe with him. He is my air. Raison d’etre.
-Tally Landon

Author’s note: This novel is part of the Truth In Lies series. It can be read as standalone, however, fans of my fiction already are highly recommending that those new to my work, READ This Much Is True book 1 FIRST.

As Lincoln Presley would say, “do as you must, Princess.”

GUEST POST

I love the synopsis of both books, and i def goona read both. I love some angst in books and i’m sure i’m going to love them. Now, for the guest post, i’d love to hear why did you chose writing about a relationship that started in lies and then make it an epic love? Where do you find your motivation to create this store? And since I love this quote from the synopsis ““There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald” i’d like to know why you chose it to this book?. Thank you!

The heroine, Tally Landon, tells lies as part of her mechanism of coping with loss. The first book in this series, This Much Is True, shows the history of these two and starts out with these two meeting under the most tragic circumstances. As the story evolves, readers gain more insight into why Tally lies. There are reasons. Good or bad. These reasons exist. And yet, as the story goes along both in book 1 This Much Is True and continuing in book 2 with The Truth About Air & Water, Tally’s learns that her past lies can still hurt her even when she aspires to tell the truth. It’s a strange twist of fate. I realize I haven’t really addressed this specifically, but I want to preserve the surprises in these two novels for readers.

“There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald

As far as this quote being included to open the book, that serves as a marker for readers and a double entendre in what transpires in this second story with these two. Linc and Tally are finally together but fate has a way of keeping them apart in The Truth About Air & Water in the most unexpected way. This quote epitomizes their epic love in having to start over and how it leads them in a different direction.

My latest novel is The Truth About Air & Water which is a follow-on storyline to my first new adult book, This Much Is True (released last year August 2013). This is a continuation of the two characters, Tally Landon and Lincoln Presley, from that first bestselling book. I wrote it as a standalone but most fans of my work insist new readers read This Much Is True FIRST.

Here’s the blurb for The Truth About Air & Water, book 2 in the Truth In Lies series.

AUTHOR

KatherineKatherine Owen writes contemporary edgy fiction, which translates to: she writes love stories that are contemporary in setting and both edgy and dark. Some readers term her books emotional roller coasters. With her writing, Owen admits she has a fondness for angst, likes to play with a little drama, and essentially toys around with the unintentional complications of love. She contends this began early on when she won a poetry contest at the age of fourteen and appears to be without end. Owen has an avid love of coffee, books, and writing, but not necessarily in that order. She writes both Contemporary Romance and New Adult fiction which includes her bestselling TRUTH IN LIES Series (a series despite despising ‘series’) beginning with This Much Is True and her latest release, The Truth About Air & Water. The TRUTH IN LIES series is fan-driven. So. There will be a third book about Linc and Tally released in 2015 titled Tell Me Something True.

About Owen’s fiction…This is NOT the light trope stuff. She travels a unique, writerly path and enjoys writing dark and angsty (a “non-word” she is fond of) emotional love stories. She often warns readers to be prepared with: time, tissues, wine, Advil or your drug of choice. And, as her most favored character, Lincoln Presley, would say, “do what you must, Princess.”

GUEST POST: Of Fandom and Fic: Christina Lauren & Tiffany Reisz in Anne Jamison’s Recent Anthology by Anna Clutterbuck-Cook

Have you ever daydreamed about what happened after your favorite book(s), movie or tv show ended? Have you thought about writing your own spin off of your favorite book(s), movie or tv shows. Look no further. In this review my friend Anna shares with us her thoughts on Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World.

headshot_wellfleetOf Fandom and Fic: Christina Lauren & Tiffany Reisz in Anne Jamison’s Recent Anthology

by Anna Clutterbuck-Cook

I’ve been asked by your wicked editrix, Angy, to say a few words about the contributions of Tiffany Reisz (“Just Change the Names”) and Christina Lauren (“Fandom Gives back”) to Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World, by Anne Jamison (Smart Pop, 2013). I reviewed the volume as a whole back in June at my blog the feminist librarian; if you’re interested in the book as a whole, I encourage you to go read the review — or just run down to your local bookstore  or library to check it out! Here, I’ll share some thoughts about the Reisz and Lauren pieces specifically.

Twilight-coverChristina Lauren is actually the nomme de plume of two authors in the Twilight fandom: Christina Hobbs (tby789) and Lauren Billings (LolaShoes). Fic also contains pieces contributed by each author individually: an interview with Christina Hobbs about her Twilight fic “The Office” and an essay by Lauren Billings on her evolution as a fanfic writer. The piece they contributed together, “The Fandom Gives Back,” charts the creation of The Fandom Gives Back, a fandom-based fund drive for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. As Christina Lauren write:

It started as a conversation: What would happen if each person [in fandom] donated a buck to charity? It could make a huge difference. Too often, Twilight fans are portrayed in the media as screaming teenager or overzealous cougars. We’re not. We’re strong women, even some men, who were inspired and impassioned by a story and a group of characters. We may have come together because of Twilight, but we stayed because we found friendship, community, encouragement, and sometimes even love that stretched across the globe (220).

Timed to coincide with the release of the Twilight films, each successive FGB campaign raised increasing amounts of money for the charity, beginning with $87,640 raised in five days with the release of New Moon to over $147k raised with the release of Eclipse. Fan creators donated labor and works — fanfic, art, merchandise — and these were auctioned off in an online benefit auction to participants. “The Fandom Gives Back” essay in Fic introduces us to the behind-the-scenes organizers who pulled off this astoundingly successful campaign and encourages us to think about the role of “giving back” in fandom culture more generally. Although many Twilight fans didn’t realize it, they were participating in a long tradition of fandom-centered charity actions, another recent example of which would be the work of The Harry Potter Alliance (founded in 2005).

The-Patriot-jason-isaacs-3468581-1024-768In her essay “Just Change the Names,” erotica writer Tiffany Reisz charts her trajectory from seminarian to published romance author through the catalyst that has pulled many of us into fanfic writing: “I can do it better!” A friend sent her an erotic fanfic centered around the character of Colonel Tavington in The Patriot (played by Jason Isaacs). Upon reading the story, she sniffed to her friend that she “could write better smut than that with [her] eyes closed,” and the friend “dared [her] to try” (289). Posting her first 9,000 words of fic to a fandom community under a pseudonym — writing erotica could have gotten her expelled from the conservative seminary she was then attending — Reitz was soon overwhelmed by positive feedback, encouragement that pushed her into completing an 80,000 word fanfic novel in two months. Following her success with one Jason Isaacs character, she turned her attention to another — Lucius Malfoy from the Harry Potter films. It was the enthusiasm of her community of fan readers that encouraged Reitz to drop out of seminary for good, get a job in a bookstore, and begin writing original works. Fic contains a number of essays by people who’ve found inspiration from fan writing to try their hand at something whole-cloth — as well as people who are stridently opposed to the blending of fanworks and commercial enterprise.

If you’re intrigued, I encourage you to check out Fic at a bookstore or library near you!
